Dragon Boating and Corporations...

Adding Dragon Boating to your Marketing Plan:

Welcome fellow dragon boat marketers!

Here we are, answering the obvious question... what does dragon boating have to do with corporations?

The answers are both obvious and not so obvious. Here's the obvious part; corporations need customers and dragon boating participants and spectators are customers.

Being involved in dragon boating and being a marketing guy, it's easy for me to see this connection. Dragon boaters are an excellent demographic for many markets and by sponsoring them savvy marketers are sure to cash in.

Here is the typical dragon boater demographics:

  • mostly female > 70%
  • between 35 and 60 years old
  • at least college education
  • middle to high income
  • health and sports minded
  • socially active

Case Study - The Quinte Dragon Boat Competition

For an example of a company that hits the commercial side of dragon boating, google "Quinte Dragon Boat". They have tons of sponsorship and have enough revenue so that they are able to travel extensively to compete.

Quinte Dragon Boat from Belleville Ontario succeeds because the owner, Pat Bradley, focuses very hard on finding sponsorship. Mr. Bradley's organization focuses on dragon boating as a business instead of simply a community organization.

Just looking at their website illustrates how much exposure his sponsors gain from the business of dragon boating in Belleville on the Bay of Quinte. Their competitors in Quinte, the Belleville Dragon Boat Club, on the other hand, has no corporate advertising on their website and rely heavily on donations to help them raise money for the United Way of Quinte in Belleville.
