Dragon boating is all about the stroke. While even the absolute novice dragon boater can jump in a dragon boat and feel comfortable paddling but, a perfect stroke, one that really contributes to the movement of the boat, takes a long time to perfect. To make things worse, different coaches define the perfect stroke in a different way.
The basic dragon boat technique consists of 4 elements: Reach, catch, pull, and exit. The reach is when you setup to perform your stroke. At "the catch" you bury the blade in the water ready to do the real work. The pull is where your reach and catch pay off in moving the boat. And the exit is where you cleanly finish the stroke and begin your movement back to the reach.
We'll examine each element separately in the following sections.
